While many of us may have heard of pomegranate, some of us may never have eaten it or used it for other purposes. Pomegranate is a heavily seeded, beautiful vibrant reddish colored fruit with a thick skin. The technical or scientific name is “punica granatum.”Pomegranate literally means “seeded apple.”
Pomegranate has been used for thousands of years and was originally found in Pakistan, Iran, Northern India, and can also be found in the California. It has even been referenced in the bible where the Egyptians not only consumed it as a nutritious food, but also began to use it for medicinal purposes such as healing ulcers.
Rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, particularly ellagic acid and vitamin C, pomegranate may help fight free radical damage which can lead to sun damage and possibly even skin cancer. Research has shown that pomegranate may contain cancer fighting properties. For example, it was found that ellagic acid may have the ability to inhibit tumors. Because pomegranate contains anti-inflammatory properties, it is ideal to take it internally as well as topically (it is always best to check with your physician first when taken internally). According to the research, it may be beneficial for heart health by helping to remove plaque from the arteries. Additionally, substances which contain anti-inflammatory properties are excellent for use in skin care since inflammation is the number one cause of aging.
Because of its antioxidant and anti-aging properties, Pomegranate can now be found in a variety of skin care products such as facial creams and sunscreen. It may help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, encourage skin cell regeneration, improve circulation and as mentioned above, may offer some protection from the sun. Pomegranate may also boost moisture levels and is great for all skin types.
If you haven’t already added pomegranate into your skin care routine, why not give it a try! Many skin care companies integrate pomegranate into their products, including the La Vie Celeste skin care line.
